The smell you get right after the rain

There is a word for the smell you get just after the rain. It is a crisp name, a clinical sounding word that reminds me of scientists who spend their days indoors and occassionally ring up a linguist they have once met at a university christmas party. “Hey,” they will say, “it is me, the analytical and precise mind who pointed out to you that your ‘juice’ was in fact made of water and concentrate and who later surmised that your current situation in life is, statistically, unlikely to improve ever. Yes, that person. Look, I need a word for the smell you get right after the rain. Do you by any chance have a spare scientific sounding word on the shelves that we can use? Thanks!” And that is the word they got. Google it because I will not have it on my blog.

There is no word that will encompass all that is in the smell you get right after the rain. The sweetness and the light. The cool and the breath. The ethereal earth of it. I am in love with that smell. It reminds me that all will be well. It reminds me that heaven touches the ground.
